The Encompass Community at Friends Academy will host two creative workshops for adults and children on September 12 at 6 p.m.

An adult workshop, titled Creativity Knocks: Meditating On Obstacles and Opportunities will focus on the idea that creativity lies within one’s mindful center. Activities will include quiet, contemplative exercises, journaling prompts, and self-reflection to help adults recognize when these opportunities might present themselves. It will be facilitated by local authors Theresa and Michael Hickey. Theresa has written several books of poetry which have been featured in newspaper columns and magazines, and Michael has authored four books.

A zine-making workshop will be held for children ages 4 and up as well. The project will involve the design and construction of a chapbook-style journal or collage of visual poems that they can take home at the end of the class. It will be facilitated by local writer Ashley Lessa, a freelance writer for South Coast Insider Magazine and a graduate of Emerson College.

The workshops will be held at Friends Academy’s 1088 Tucker Road campus and are free -- although donations are always accepted -- and are open to the public. To RSVP, email egouveia@friendsacademy1810.org.
