Teamwork and flexibility helped the Dartmouth High School girls lacrosse team win the Southeast Conference championship against New Bedford High June 14, head coach Chris Tresca said.

The final score was 10-6.

During a shortened season, team members worked hard and “came in every day with the right attitude,’’ he said.

With all the uncertainty surrounding a Covid year, Tresca encouraged his team to “treat every day on the field like it’s our last.’’

He praised the leadership of senior co-captains defender Kristen Medeiros and midfielder Kelly Medeiros.

Junior captain Sorelle Lawton reached an impressive milestone at the June 14 game, scoring her 104th goal in just two seasons, with an average of 4.5 goals per game.

“No ball goes by her without her getting her stick on it,’’ she said. “The ball’s always around her.’’

Lawton’s skills have not gone unnoticed: She has a verbal commitment to play lacrosse at Cornell University after graduation. 

“She’s a pretty remarkable player,’’ Tresca said.

Goaltender Molly Rioux, a junior, maintains an important line of communication among her teammates, Tresca said. “She brings the girls in to figure out the defense’’ and to make sure any lapses are not repeated, he said. 

Solid defense is a vital part of the team’s success, Tresca said. He frequently reminded team members that they are a “full team playing both sides of the ball. Everyone plays offense. Everyone plays defense.’’

He also emphasized perspective. “If you make a mistake, shrug it off and make a positive play next time.’’

The team should find out their next game and opponent Wednesday, June 16 when MIAA seedings are released. 

Win or lose, he said, they do it as a team. “It’s a very close group,’’ Tresca said. “They enjoy playing together.’’
