Help clean up Buttonwood Brook

Mar 14, 2024

Join the DNRT and Buzzards Bay Coalition in removing trash from Buttonwood Brook on Saturday, April 6 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Running along Route 140 and through Buttonwood Park in New Bedford, Buttonwood Brook is the most significant freshwater stream feeding into Apponagansett Bay and Padanaram Harbor in Dartmouth.

However, significant amounts of trash has accumulated either directly from dumping or by washing in on stormwater from city streets.

The focus will be on three stretches of Buttonwood Brook:

  • Hidden Brook Apartments to Route 140
  • Buttonwood Park
  • Milton Street to Russells Mills Road

Attendees are encouraged to bring gloves and/or trash grabbers. In addition, participants should wear old clothes that can get dirty and waterproof boots, preferably knee-high rubber boots.

Those interested can register to clean up a preferred stretch of brook, but note the goal is to cleanup all three areas, so if one work area is full, consider working in another area. If all areas fill up and there is still interest, the trust and coalition will re-open them all.
