Historical Society lecture will look back at Old East Beach
David Jones will take history buffs on a photographic walk into the past during a illustrated lecture titled “East Beach before the Hurricanes on April 10 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Dartmouth Historical & Arts Society, located in the Russells Mills Schoolhouse.
The area once housed summer cottages, hotels, dance hall, bowling alley and Catholic church before the Hurricane of 1938 swept them away. The neighborhood was rebuilt soon after, only to be devastated again during the Hurricane of 1954.
Using insurance maps from the 1930s and 1940s, Jones will recreate plot lines of the developments. Attendees are encouraged to bring old photographs of the area to the event.
A $5 donation is recommended to attend. Refreshments will be served. For more information, email: info@DartmouthHAS.org.
