Police are seeking public assistance in finding a hit and run driver who fled to Dartmouth after critically injuring a 30-year-old woman in Westport on Tuesday.

They believe the male suspect was driving a gray BMW 3 Series model from 1999 through 2005 that may have sustained minor damage to its hood, front end and/or front passenger side. 

The vehicle was last seen at the corner of Old Fall River Road and Faunce Corner Road in Dartmouth at around 8:30 p.m.

According to police, the accident occurred around 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday evening near 288 Old Bedford Road in Westport. 

The victim was walking along the side of the roadway when she was struck by a sedan-style vehicle. First responders arrived to find her face down in the breakdown lane, and rushed her to Rhode Island Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

A witness said that the male driver got out of the car and apparently said he was sorry and didn’t mean to hit the victim, before speeding off to the east on Old Bedford Road.

Police said that another witness to the accident managed to follow the male suspect to Old Fall River Road in Dartmouth but lost him at Faunce Corner Road.

According to the witness, the suspect was driving at high speeds and was passing other vehicles by swerving into the oncoming traffic lane.

Although officers spoke with several witnesses who remained on scene, they believe other people may have seen the crash, the vehicle that struck the victim or may have information about the driver.
