Improvements to Routes 6 and 177 slated for March 28
Crews are scheduled to start a $2.2 million construction project March 28 that the Department of Public Works director said will result in a safer intersection where Route 6 meets Route 177 near the Westport town line.
Phase one of the project, funded by a MassWorks state grant, calls for the realignment of a dangerous stretch of road known for poor visibility and numerous accidents.
“It’s a very difficult turning movement if you need to get off Route 6 heading westbound to turn onto Route 177,” said Department of Public Works Director David Hickox.
Hickox added that drivers on Route 177 approaching Route 6 to enter the westbound lane have trouble getting on the highway.
“It’s an odd intersection,” he said. “That’s an awkward and dangerous turn and this project will make it much safer.”
Improvements will alleviate congestion and traffic safety concerns following the construction of a 42-acre housing development at the former site of the Lincoln Park amusement park.
Known as the Village at Lincoln Park, the project includes the construction of three apartment buildings, 57 single-family homes and roughly 80,000 square feet of commercial space.
The first 36-unit apartment building opened this winter. Construction is set to begin on two more apartment buildings with 42-units and 48-units later this year.
Hickox explained the intersection’s new layout will include sidewalks and left-hand turn lanes on opposite sides of Route 6.
The project will widen and reconstruct 445 feet of Route 177 as it approaches the interstate highway. On Route 6, the project will improve 1,150 feet of road.
Hickox said some construction related to utility poles was finished this winter. Upcoming work will bring excavation, paving and the installation of stormwater drains, a median and concrete wheelchair ramps.
Hickox said phase two of the project includes plans for traffic lights should grant funds become available in the next two to four years.
