Indians jump high, throw far at State Championships
The Indians are jumping high and throwing long this season.
It was a successful day for the Dartmouth Indians at the MIAA Division 3 State Track Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center on Thursday, Feb. 11. The event includes various track and field events.
Senior Skylar Barthelmes was yet again a state champion, as she annihilated her nearest competition by more than 5 feet, to win the shot put competition. According to Barthelmes, her best throw went 42 feet, 2.5 inches, which allowed her to finish far ahead of Oliver Ames’ Chi-Chi Akanegbu, who finished second at 37-00.
“That was my season best,” said Barthelmes, “but it wasn’t my personal record.”
Barthelmes won the Div. 3 indoor title in 2015 with a throw of 40-11.5 and continues to break records at Dartmouth High School. She plans to continue throwing when she attends college at Elon University.
Junior Coral Perry finished second in the long jump at 16 feet 9.5 inches. Perry mentioned that for her first jump, she received a personal record of 15 feet 11 inches, and became more motivated to jump further when Coach Jeff Reed said that she needed 6 more inches in order to break the school record. She was also 13th in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.71 seconds.
“Coral Perry has been struggling all season with shin splints and went into the competition with a personal record of 15’4.5" in the long jump and left in second place and a new school record of 16’9.5”,” said head coach Caitlin McCarron Deely.
“The competition was tough, but I’m pleased to say I broke the school record with the help of my coaches,” said Perry. “Once I got a personal record in the 55-meter dash, I had so much energy that I knew I would do well in the long jump.”
Junior Caitlyn Demers finished sixth in the high jump, jumping 5-feet, while the 4x800 relay (Isabella Freitas, Demers, Rachel Gin, Maddie Lynch) was ninth in 10:11.66. The 4x200 relay (Perry, Victoria LaBree, Allison Silvia, Julia Whelan) was 12th in 1:52.92.
“I am very proud of all of our athletes who competed at the division three meet last week,” said McCarron Deely. “We had some excellent performances. Our 4x200 [girls] team set a personal record and our 4x800 [girls] team placed ninth overall.”
McCarron Deely also mentioned that the Indians have three girls competing at All States this upcoming weekend: Barthelmes, Perry, and Demers.
Junior Colin McCabe received second-place in the shot put, although his 48-foot throw was nearly 10 feet behind Bishop Connolly’s Cole Stewart.
Junior Jordan Pacheco was seventh in the high jump after clearing 5-10. He was also eighth in the 300 with a time of 37.56. Junior Ben Paine was 10th in the 600 in 1:27.61, dropping 1.5 seconds off his seed time. Daniel Grubbs-Donovan was 13th in the 1-mile (4:46.22), while Tomas Caneira and Nathan Ellis tied for 16th in the high jump (5-7), Nathan Morgado was 19th in the 55 hurdles (8.79) and Nick Marques was 23rd in the shot put (40-0). The Indians’ 4x200 relay (Anthony Lee, Paine, Morgado, Pacheco) took 12th with a time of 1:37.42 and the 4x800 relay (Grubbs-Donovan, Zach LaJeunesse, Mac Lynch, Greg Martin) was 13th in 9:03.46.
“We all trained hard during the week to better our times,” said Martin. “Mac Lynch filled in nicely for Jacob Oliveira who was away on vacation.”
