John B. Steele Tournament wraps up first weekend
The Dartmouth Youth Activities Association's John B. Steele Baseball Tournament wrapped up its first weekend on August 7 with the age 10-and-under and age 13-and-under tournaments.
With 14 teams from as far away as Sandwich competing in the 10-and-under division, the Swansea Independent Baseball League 10-and-under won with a 6-11 win against Fairhaven-Acushnet Little League.
Leading into the championship game, Swansea picked up a 8-0 win against Sandwich 10-and-under, a 5-3 win against Maplewood 10-and-under and an 18-8 win against Dartmouth 9-and-under. The team only lost one game, with a 10-9 loss to Whaling City 10-and-under.
In the smaller, seven-team 13-and-under tournament, Greater New Bedford 13-and-under defeated Middleboro 13-and-under 13-3 in the championship game. Middleboro finished the tournament as the runner-up.
According to Tournament Director Jim Vieira, the event, which has been running for more than 50 years, is one of the region's longest-running baseball tournaments.
“This is probably the oldest baseball tournament in Southeastern Massachusetts,” Vieira said.
Vieira noted that the event is the largest fundraiser of the year for the Youth Activities Association, due to the proceeds from team registrations. Most of the other funds the association brings in come from concession sales.
“It takes a lot to put this together,” Vieira said. "Our volunteers are what makes this tournament happen. Without our volunteers we wouldn't be able to do it."
This year, the tournament featured a new playoff format: pool play. Instead of a double elimination format like in previous years, the 14 teams that entered in the 10-and-under tournament were divided into four groups. The top two teams from each of the groups then advanced to the postseason on August 7.
The Steele Tournament will continue from August 12 to August 14, featuring the 12-and-under tournament.
