Voters headed to their fire district's headquarters to select Prudential Committee members on April 24. Prudential Committee members are charged with overseeing the district's finances.

Fire District No. 1 was the only contested race, with two residents running for the open, three-year term on the three-person board. Incumbent John Haran took the seat against newcomer Joann Avila with a 271-183 win.

Haran is known for his fiscally conservative views. While he recently supported a new engine purchase, he voted against a pay raise for Prudential Committee members and other district personnel, and abstained from voting on Chief Brad Ellis' salary.

"We bought a truck without asking for any money. No other district does that," Haran said in a prior interview, explaining that proper saving and appropriation made that possible, while other departments take out loans.

Haran currently sits on the Select Board, and boasts prior experience on the Planning Board and Finance Committee, and as a Town Meeting member.

"I just want to be part of the solution," he said. "I have to watch over your taxes."

On Haran's radar is managing the district's equipment and prepping for the future. He's initiated research to revamp the old fire station, across from the current Bridge Street headquarters, for future use as storage or offices.

Haran will continue serving with committee members Jeff Costa and Joe Silvia.

Also on the District No. 1 ballot, incumbent Ed Pimental was reelected as district clerk, with 344 votes, and incumbent John Foster was reelected as treasurer with 356 votes. Four hundred and fifty-six votes were cast in total.

In District No. 3, current Prudential Committee Chair Terry Pimental was reelected to serve a two-year term with the committee. Pimental was appointed last summer to fill the vacancy. Pimental has served the department for more than 20 years, both as a volunteer firefighter and working with the district's fundraising arm. His focus is to keep equipment updated for an effective response time and safety.

Voters also seated Michael Ricardo to a three-year term. As the owner of Ricardo Corporation, the newcomer looks to bring his business savvy to the committee and focus on lowering taxes.

Both candidates were uncontested. They will serve alongside nine-year committee member Bob Zina.

While there were no candidates running for District No. 2's third seat, voters elected Greg Edgcomb through write-in nominations. Edgcomb said his 21 years as a firefighter — he currently volunteers for District No. 2 and works in Bourne as a full-time firefighter paramedic — will help him maintain a working department.

"I'm excited, optimistic. Hopefully, I do well for the district," said Edgcomb. He will serve beside Prudential Committee members Ralph Medeiros and Bernie Giroux.

Also upcoming are the fire districts' annual meetings, at which voters will be asked to approve each district's 2018 budget. District No. 1 will meet on Wednesday, May 10 at 6:30 p.m.; District No. 2 will meet Monday, May 8 at 7 p.m.; District No. 3 will meet on Monday, May 1 at 7 p.m. Attached are the annual meeting agendas.
