Joseph D. Louro, 76

Joseph D. Louro, 76, of Dartmouth, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 17, 2018 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Carol S. (Soares) Louro with whom he shared 50 years of marriage and son of the late Joseph and Theresa (Da Luz) Louro.

Born in New Bedford, he has resided in Dartmouth since 1985 and was a parishioner of St. Julie Billiart Church.

Joe was employed as a Foreman in the Traffic Division for Massachusetts Highway Department (DPW) until his retirement.

In his youth, he played baseball and basketball for the C.Y.O. He served in the Army Reserves. He was employed in the family business, Louro’s Market, and following his father's death, he was proprietor for 14 years.

Joe was a man of quiet faith. He devoted much of his time volunteering in a soup kitchen in New Bedford. He enjoyed cooking, especially for his family at the holidays, and was famous for making all of the desserts for his wife's cooking classes. A devoted family man, Joe enjoyed traveling with his wife, children and grandchildren. He was a member of the Mt. Carmel Seniors.

His family includes his wife, Carol S. Louro; 2 sons, Christopher J. Louro and his companion, Sheila and John C. Louro, all of Acushnet; 2 daughters, Tracy M. Shelford and her companion Kevin and Aimee M. Bergeron and her husband Chad, all of Dartmouth; 2 sisters, Judith Rodrigues and Theresa Paiva; 5 grandchildren, Joshua, Destiny, Tabitha, Emma and Ruby; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Paul Louro and Marcia Delorme.

Visiting hours will be held in the funeral home Friday, Dec. 21, from 3:00 to 7:00 P.M. His funeral will be conducted Saturday, Dec. 22, 8:45 A.M. at the funeral home with a Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated in St. Julie Billiart Church at 10:00 A.M. Interment in South Dartmouth Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joe's memory to a local food pantry.
