Land trust offers series of walks

Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust is hosting a series of  walks through the end of the year. All walks are free unless noted but registration is required by calling (508) 991-2289.

Dike Creek Reserve Retrospective will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9 at Dike Creek Reserve. The walk takes visitors through the trust’s newest property, which includes salt marsh views, lush woodlands and an active vineyard.

Morning paddle will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14 at a location to be determined. Participants should bring their own canoes or kayaks. 

Smith Farm bird walk takes place at 8 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 26 at Smith Farm Reserve. Stroll the farm in search of migratory birds. No dogs allowed.

Knowles-Padanaram Reserve Retrospective will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30 at Knowles-Padanaram Reserve. The short evening hike will explore the reserve.

A story walk is available every day in October at Paskamansett Woods and Ridge Hill Reserves. This self-guided walk encourages children to take a hike while reading a book. Pages from a storybook will be posted at Paskamansett Woods in English and Spanish.

A bee walk on 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2 at Helfand Farm will take visitors through the farm. Professor Robert Gegear, founder of the Beecology Project, will lead the walk and discus which native plants can help save declining bee populations.

A mushroom walk will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16 at Destruction Brook Woods. Attendees will walk through the woods to identify the many types of mushrooms found throughout. This is not a foraging walk.

A haunted hike geared toward children ages 6-10 will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29 at Smith Farm Reserve. The farm will be decorated for children and the walk will not be too scary. After a stroll through the property, spooky stories will be shared around the campfire. $10 per family.

A little monsters hike, aimed at children 2-5, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 30 at Smith Farm Reserve and feature costumed volunteers leading the youngsters through the property. Dress-up is encouraged. 

Sunrise Stroll at 6 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10 at Ocean View Farm will allow visitors to observe the sunrise from the viewing platform at the farm.

Post-Thanksgiving walk, at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 26 at Destruction Brook Woods will allow attendees to walk off their turkey dinner with a calorie-burning, refreshing hike.

Women’s Walk at 10 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 12 at Parsons Reserve will also explore the history of the reserve and Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust. 

Paskamansett Woods Reserve Retrospective at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21 will hike through one of the Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust’s most recently opened properties and listen for barred owls. 

New Year’s Day hike at Dike Creek Reserve at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 1 greets 2022 with a walk through the property.
