The Dartmouth Historical and Arts Society will be hosting a Zoom presentation on Portuguese immigration to the South Coast of Massachusetts on Sunday, May 16 at 6:30 p.m.

UMass Dartmouth librarian archivist and liaison Sonia Pacheco from the Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese American Archives will lead the talk.

Pacheco will outline the history of Portuguese immigration to the area from the end of the 19th century through the 20th century.

During the talk she will also provide an overview of the common issues that are faced by genealogists in uncovering their Portuguese ancestors.

As Portuguese, History and Foreign Languages library liaison at the university, Pacheco has over sixteen years’ experience in information and heritage, and has a master’s in history from the University of Massachusetts Boston.

She is interested in archives and libraries in immigrant communities, preserving community memory, and the relationship between first generation immigrants and their offspring, particularly as related to memory and cultural identity.

All community members and history aficionados are encouraged to register for this event at the DHAS website, dartmouthhas.org/events.html.

Once registered, the user will receive via email all the instructions for participating via Zoom.
