The Dartmouth Historical and Arts Society will be hosting local historian Richard Gifford on Sunday, Oct. 27 for a talk titled “The Native American History of Acoaxet, 1671-1750.”
The talk will discuss the origins and lives of the Native American community in Acoaxet, which has more 17th century Native American records than all of Old Dartmouth, said the Dartmouth Historical and Arts Society.
Gifford will talk about people, including Mamanuah, the local sachem who was kidnapped in 1673 by agents of his stepmother, who was the ruler of a neighboring tribe; Alderman, who slayed King Philip while fighting for the English; and the “Indian justice” John Simon.
During the event, the lives and locations of some Acoaxet descendants will also be traced.
The event is free and light refreshments will be served.
The event begins at 2:30 p.m. at the Russells Mills Schoolhouse at 1205 Russells Mills Road.
