The Dartmouth Historical and Arts Society will host a lecture on the story of Dartmouth Quaker Captain Cornelius Howland, who twice escaped from the clutches of the Royal Navy in the 18th century.
The lecture will be hosted by author and journalist Robert Barboza, and will feature the life and seafaring history of Howland.
Howland was 17 when his whaleship was captured by the Royal Navy in the West Indies. He escaped from a Scottish prison, but was again taken into custody by the Royal Navy when another ship he was aboard was intercepted by a British man-of-war.
The lecture will cover Howland’s voyages, his return to Dartmouth, and other stories documented by his family.
It will be held on January 5, 2:30 p.m. - 4 p.m. at the Russells Mills Schoolhouse, 1205 Russells Mills Road.
