Lions Club prepares for upcoming events
From lawn flamingo pranks to comedy events, the Dartmouth Lions Club is putting the "fun" in "fundraisers."
The Lions Club eased their way into the new year with their first ever pancake breakfast. Held on Saturday, Jan. 16 at the Smith Mills Christian Congregational Church from 8 to 11 a.m, Dartmouth Lions Club President Wayne Vandal dubbed it a success.
“A good number of people showed up, and helped out,” he said.
Proceeds from the event will go toward supporting community projects.
Coming up in the spring is their annual Flamingo Flock-a-Friend event. Often done as a practical joke, people can have the Lions fill a person of his or her choice’s yard with lawn flamingos. Proceeds from flockings go towards the Massachusetts Lions Eye Research Fund. According to Vandal, last year, the Lions donated $65,000 to the organization, while the South Coast donates $1 million annually.
The Massachusetts Lions Eye Research Fund was created to fund grants for Massachusetts institutions performing research related to the prevention and cure of eye-related diseases. It’s helped establish the Howe Laboratory at Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary, the Massachusetts Lions Eye Research Laboratory at Boston University Medical Center, and the Lions Laboratory for Genetic Research at Schepens Eye Research Institute, all major research centers based in Boston.
Additionally, the Dartmouth Lions do their part to help supply glasses and hearing aids to people of the area in need. Vandal estimates that, last year, the Dartmouth Lions donated at least half a dozen sets of hearing aids and more than two dozen pairs of glasses.
“People come to us and we take care of them,” Vandal said.
The Lions Club organization is very dedicated to the eye care of people abroad as well. last year, Lions Clubs across the country contributed in donating 18,000 pairs of glasses to people in need in Honduras. Though no one in the Dartmouth Club has gone abroad, Vandal has heard tales from people in other local chapters that go on these missions. People are “dumbfounded” at seeing the world clearly for the first time.
On April 15, a comedy night is being held at White’s of Westport.
“April 15th is tax day so people will need a laugh,” Vandal said.
Returning for its sixth year, tickets to the event will be $10. Three comedians from the Boston area are booked as this year’s acts, and Vandal, who has seen them, is very excited about their reception.
“Just getting them booked was a thrill,” he said.
