Lloyd Center bird walks explore beauty of autumn

Sep 20, 2021

Autumn bird activity will be showcased at two fall walks led by research associate Jamie Bogart at Lloyd Center for the Environment, 430 Potomska Road.

During the first fall bird walk, to be held from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, visitors may observe birds on the move, including the first warbler wave and various waterbird species.

Monarch butterfly migration is peaking, with the colorful insects possibly visible in the Center’s butterfly garden.

Inclement weather date is Sept. 26.

During the second fall bird walk, which will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, participants may see more warblers and catch sightings of waterbirds, including the first migrant American black ducks that winter on the Lloyd Center estuaries.

Raptors such as sharp-shinned and Cooper’s hawks are moving in as well and the first sign of fall foliage is likely visible.

Inclement weather date is Sunday, Oct. 3

Those attending should bring binoculars and/or a camera, if available, and wear footwear suitable for light walking on forest trails.

Be prepared in case masks and/or social distancing are still required.

Participants should meet at the Lloyd Center’s lower parking lot located at 430 Potomska Road in Dartmouth.

The price of each walk for Lloyd Center members is $10 for ages 13 and up and $2 for children under 12. For non-members, the price is $13 for ages 13 and up and $4 for children under 12. Space is limited to 10. The walks are suitable for ages 10 and older.

Pre-registration is required by noon on Friday, Sept. 24 for the first bird walk and by noon Friday, Oct. 1 for the second bird walk.
