Maria Sofia Moniz, 84, of Dartmouth, died Thursday, May 7, 2020 at Charlton Memorial Hospital, following a period of declining health.

She was born in Agua de Pau, São Miguel, Açores and lived in Southampton, Bermuda, with her husband and children. In 1977, she and her family relocated to the United States and settled in South Dartmouth. She was the daughter of the late José Luis and Almorinda (Cabral) Vieira and the wife for 59 years of Norberto da Costa Moniz.

She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, South Dartmouth. She was a devoted mother and wife and will always be remembered for her kindness and lovely sense of humor. In her leisure time she created amazing embroidery work. Spending time with her grandchildren brought her the most joy.

Survivors include her husband: Norberto da Costa Moniz of South Dartmouth; 1 son: Norman M. Moniz and his wife Debra and their daughter, Helen Moniz, of Medfield, Mass; 1 daughter: Octavia M. Moniz (late husband, Zavier Chickering) and their daughter, Olivia Chickering of Marblehead, Mass; 1 brother: Carlos Vieira and his wife Aldora of Bristol, Rhode Island; 1 sister: Maria dos Anjos Vieira of Agua de Pau, São Miguel, Açores; numerous nieces and nephews.

Private funeral arrangements entrusted to Aubertine-Lopes Funeral Home, 129 Allen Street, New Bedford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Maria's memory to St. Mary's Church, South Dartmouth or Southcoast Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice. The family would like to acknowledge the nursing staff of Atwood 5 at Charlton Memorial Hospital for the loving care they extended.
