Meeting Street Telethon comes to Dartmouth
Next weekend, a young student at The Schwartz Center will be helping several co-hosts in Dartmouth and Rhode Island raise money for her school.
The Meeting Street Telethon, an event which has long helped Meeting Street School in Providence raise funds, will be broadcast from both campuses for the first time. Meeting Street took over leadership at The Schwartz Center in 2014.
The telethon will air from 7 to 11 p.m. on Jan 30.
The Schwartz Center provides educational and therapeutic services for children with disabilities and special needs. While based in Dartmouth, the center supports children from Attleboro to Cape Cod.
“Cardi’s Furniture and [WPRI-TV Channel 12] are building a set, so it’ll be the real deal,” said Beatriz Oliveira, development manager of the Dartmouth campus. “There will be phone banks and our supporters will be answering phones. The community’s invited to call in and pledge their support for our school.”
The telethon is hosted by news anchors from WPRI as well as Meeting Street students. Two kids will be helping out in Rhode Island, and a 7-year-old named Molly will be assisting the crew in Dartmouth. On Friday, about a week away from the telethon, Molly was all smiles when asked if she was excited about co-anchoring the show.
During the telethon, viewers can get a glimpse inside The Schwartz Center and the various programs offered within.
“We have a full-time school that’s year round. We also have pediatric rehabilitation services and early intervention services,” said Oliveira. “We serve about 2,000 children through our various programs, and Meeting Street serves about 3,000 children throughout the Providence area.”
The Dartmouth campus includes classrooms, a physical therapy room, a therapy pool and an inclusive playground designed for children with special needs.
Oliveira said that donations will help go toward the cost of operations and other projects. She said the school hopes to be able to establish a formal library, for example.
“We’re looking to expand the arts program as well. Art is important for all students, but particularly for children with special needs,” she said.
The public is welcome to come to The Swartz Center, located on 1 Posa Place, off Old Westport Road, during the telethon.
“We encourage our families and supporters to join us that evening and see what’s going on behind the scenes,” said Oliveira.
