No tricks, just treats at Dartmouth High football playoff game
If there’s anything Dartmouth takes seriously, it’s Halloween and high school football.
On Friday, Oct. 30, Dartmouth High School students and fans were treated to a generous taste of both at the state play-off game against Sharon High School Eagles. In front of a costume-clad cheering section, the Dartmouth Indians (6-3) defeated the Eagles (3-5), 44-7. This win against Sharon in the MIAA Southeast quarterfinals brings them to the next round of the Division 3 Sectionals.
“We’re so proud!” shouted one of the "Girls of ‘16," a group of seniors among the packed bleachers at Memorial Field.
Bundled up in costumes from Minnie Mouse to a banana and all talking at the same time, the Girls of '16 said they have been at every game of the season supporting their friends and fellow students. They didn’t skimp on the away games either, making the hour drive to Barnstable to cheer for their team.
“We’re superfans!” one member explained.
Dartmouth wasted no time getting things off the ground. Just three minutes into the game, running back Chris Martin scored the first touchdown, the first of three he made during the game.
Just over a minute later, quarterback Cole Jacobson scored the next touchdown, going into the second quarter with a score of 13-0.
In the second quarter, Dartmouth didn’t let up an inch. Instead, they scored a collective 24 points–three touchdowns and a field goal–against Sharon, who didn’t manage to rally a single point.
After the Dartmouth High School Band and Colorguard halftime performance of “Into the Hive,” Dartmouth, with a very comfortable lead of 37-0, swapped in some of their younger players to give them a chance to bask in the glory and maybe give Sharon a fighting chance.
Though the third quarter wasn’t as impressively high-scoring as the previous one, Dartmouth running back Marquise Adams scored the team another touchdown, bringing the score to 44-0.
It wasn’t until the final quarter that Dartmouth’s streak ended and Sharon managed to score a touchdown. Dartmouth didn’t score again but they won the game, 44-7.
Dartmouth High School is one of the only teams to survive tonight’s playoff games.
Dartmouth will play their next game against Plymouth North High School on Friday, Nov. 6.
