Opinion: Securing, not seizing

Mar 28, 2025

To the editor,

To deny that there is a major issue with uncontrolled immigration is counterproductive and prolongs an effective bipartisan solution.  But to roundup and seize immigrants, without regard to status or situation, is inhumane and ultimately a greater drain on the economy and stain on America’s reputation.

Engaging untrained personnel to arrest and process for deportation people only suspected of illegal status and not allowing the opportunity to defend themselves, is just another assault on the rule of law.

Applying the resources  that are being squandered on this haphazard dragnetting and transporting would be  better spent on  creating a well trained federal enforcement group and increasing immigration judgeships.

The anger and misdirected blame that has infected this country has afforded Trump and his handlers the opportunity to dismantle governmental departments and regulatory protections while rewarding the wealthiest and fashioning an oligarchy.  Diverting attention from the true mission of this administration, by fulfilling a campaign promise of a massive crackdown on undocumented immigrants,  has provided sufficient cover and incentive to maintain the fidelity of the MAGA base.

Unfortunately, there are some state law enforcement personnel, such as sheriffs, police officers and judges all willing to assist in this deportation debacle to vent anger or to display their fidelity to Trump.

Indiscriminately punishing  thousands of immigrants may alleviate some of the pent up anger and resentment of MAGA  activists but ultimately still leaves the major issues facing the country unaddressed and creating new ones.
