Opinion: We need more ordinary citizens in the legislature

Mar 14, 2022

To the editor:

When our Governor announced that he and his running mate would not seek reelection, many of us feared that the true side of the Republican party would not be represented in the 2022 election. Happily that is not going to be the case.

Qualified candidates are stepping forward and it looks like there will be a lively convention in May to pick a winning team. Town committees are selecting delegates to the convention. If you are or were a Republican and want a say in the direction the party will take, consider being a delegate.

While the convention picks the statewide candidates, these candidates, if elected, need  support from the legislature so the party needs candidates at the local level.

Did you know that many of the Democratic candidates have had NO OPPOSITION for years. A democracy needs two strong parties and the only qualification you need is to be a citizen, a resident and have common sense. We need more ordinary citizens in the legislature instead of all lawyers.

You do not need a big "war chest" if you stay locally and are willing to meet with groups in your community. Think about it.  Even at 90 and handicapped, I am considering running.

Let's make democracy work.
