Parking ban issued ahead of storm

A parking ban has been issued in Dartmouth ahead of a winter storm.

The Dartmouth Department of Public Works issued a parking ban, which will take effect from 12 a.m. on January 7 to 6 p.m. on January 8. No parking will be allowed on the hydrant side of the street. On streets that do not have a hydrant, parking is only allowed on the side with even house numbers.

The parking ban follows an early morning system that moved into Dartmouth on January 6, dumping about four to five inches of fluffy white snow across the South Coast, according to estimates collected by the National Weather Service.

Dartmouth police reported an accident on Russells Mills Road near Chase Road. A pickup truck ended up in the woods there at about 1:30 p.m. Police advise drivers that even roads that look clear could contain black ice, and ask motorists to notify the department of any icy roads.

The snow was not enough to cancel or delay Dartmouth schools, but the Department of Public Works canceled January 6’s scheduled Christmas tree pick-up. According to the department, tree collection will continue on the next scheduled date, January 12.

An even larger system will make its way into the area on Saturday. The National Weather Service upgraded a Winter Storm Watch to a Winter Storm Warning for southern Bristol County at around 3:30 p.m. Friday. It will begin at 7 a.m. on January 7, and will remain in effect until late Sunday night.

According to the warning, Dartmouth could be in store for between 12 to 16 inches of snow, which is projected to begin Saturday morning, with heavy snow continuing through the afternoon an evening before ending late Saturday night. The warning notes reduced visibility and slick roads, as well as near-blizzard conditions are possible.
