Parks and Recreation Board selects bands for concert series
Snow has finally arrived this winter, but the Board of Parks and Recreation is giving residents something summery to think about as they’re shoveling.
During their meeting Tuesday night, board members selected next year’s line up for the Summer Concert Series. The Wednesday night concerts are held throughout the summer at Apponagansett Park off Gulf Road.
Last month during the Parks and Recreation meeting, board member Joseph Vieira put out a call for local bands to see if this year’s line-up could feature bands with some connection to Dartmouth, whether a band member was a Dartmouth High alum or a current resident.
Becky Amaral, the principal clerk for the department, presented the board with a list of 23 bands that reached out to her since that time, expressing interest in performing at the beach.
After some debate during the meeting, the board settled on a 13 bands, six of which are returning from previous years and seven that are new to the venue.
While the board agreed to the list, Amaral said she still needs to contact the bands to finalize contracts. Once confirmed, she can start solidifying a schedule for the roster. The 2016 concert series will run from June 15 to September 7.
The returning performers are: Headcase, Scarab, Wild Nites, Whiskey Affair, Negative Earth and Funky White Honkies.
The new musical acts are: Tattoo Cowboy, Soul Shyne, Outta Kontrol, Mizer, Ageless, The New Band and John Coelho.
According to their respective Facebook pages, the new crop of bands range in genre from country to soul. The bulk of the new bands fall under the banner of rock and roll.
