Paskamansett concerts aim to bring family-friendly shows to Dartmouth Grange

Starting July 11, there will be another place for the family to catch a concert in Dartmouth.

The Paskamansett Concert Series is a reoccurring event that’s set to take place on the second Saturday of every month featuring local, regional, and national bluegrass, folk, and Americana-type acts in the historic Dartmouth Grange Patrons Hall on Fisher Road.

Event organizer Russ Smith, the former head of the Sandywoods Concert Series in Tiverton Rhode Island, said he and others are eager to get started with the shows.

“We’re anxious to get the rolling,” said Smith, who recently started the “Root ’n Branch” radio show on UMass Dartmouth’s WUMD 89.3.

Smith said part of the focus of the shows is to provide an atmosphere that’s fitting for the entire family, with a flat rate of $35 being offered for families of four or more. Individual tickets are $15, with children under 18, seniors, and college students paying $12.

“We want to encourage families,” said Smith, noting that there will be a raised stage for the performers at the 85-person venue, and that families are encouraged to bring picnic baskets and non-alcoholic beverages to the shows.

Smith said initially, he reached out to the folks at the Grange with the idea because of his love for the building and the Russells Mills Village area, and they were in favor of hosting the shows.

“It’s like going back in time,” said Smith of the classic Greek Revival building constructed in 1837 as a two-room schoolhouse. “It’s got a nice, historic feel. I think it will be perfect for the type of music we’re bringing in.”

Nancy Manley, a 50-plus year member of the Dartmouth Grange who serves as its treasurer and also books events, said they’re looking forward to hosting the shows.

“We’re very happy to have them,” said Manley. “I think it’s a good venue for it. We’re excited to give it a try.”

“They were really supportive of the idea,” added Smith of the Grange group. “They couldn’t have been nicer.”

The first act set to perform at the series is the Spindle Rock River Rats, an eight-piece act that plays an eclectic mix of folk, fiddle, bluegrass and popular western tunes. The band features three members from Dartmouth -- Juergen Hallemeier on accordion, Brad Jenkins on banjo, and Dock Murdock on the dobro -- among several others from the surrounding area.

Hallemeier, who has lived in Dartmouth for over 40 years, looks forward to playing at the Grange.

"Dartmouth is one of the nicest places to live," he said. "And the Grange -- it's an old locale -- it's been around for many years. It's a wonderful place to do all types of things. It's just a great place to perform."
