Plans introduced for Reed Road sidewalk
At some point, pedestrians could get the chance to walk a safe, three-mile route around Noquochoke Lake.
Members of Dartmouth Pathways Committee met Tuesday evening and discussed preliminary plans for a sidewalk along Reed Road to the south of Interstate 195 that they said could potentially lead to a walking loop around the lake.
“The larger scheme potential is for recreational loop for people to get a three-mile walk in,” said Chairman Alan Heureux.
The group mainly discussed plans for the sidewalk, which they said could help connect the development at the former Lincoln Park Fairgrounds to the lake and surrounding community.
“People like to walk along there,” said Heureux.
“The timing is just right (to explore the potential for a sidewalk),” added Paul Melancon of the committee, who along with Heureux drew up a plan that they said would eventually be proposed to town officials and engineers at the Massachusetts Department of Transportation in the near future. “It’s easily achievable. There’s some benefits there.”
Melancon said that currently, Reed Road is 12-feet wide, which is a foot above the town’s new 11-foot road width restriction. He said the road’s width would allow room for a sidewalk on the west side of the road.
“The most narrow area is at the bridge crossings,” he said. “We’re not really squeezing things in.”
Currently, the speed limit along Reed Road varies between 25 and 40 miles per hour, and commission members said adding a sidewalk could potentially lead to a lower speed limit, making the road safer for pedestrians.
“It would be really nice to have a sidewalk along there,” said member Marcia Picard. “It’s really dangerous. There’s the early commuter traffic and late afternoon traffic. It’s really, really busy. It’s not safe.”
Heureux said he wasn’t sure whether the project could get state funding, but that he and others would explore several options moving forward.
“It’s already difficult to keep what we have in good to excellent condition,” said Greg Barnes, the Finance Director for Dartmouth. “Probably the biggest issue is the funding issue.”
