Police chief fills three new positions in command staff

Three police officers greeted the Select Board on November 28 to accept their new titles, part of a command staff restructuring designed to save the police department more than $40,000.

Twenty-six year veteran Lt. Mark Zielinski was promoted to captain, while 24-year veteran and sergeant Tony Vincent and 12-year veteran Brian Sladewski were promoted to lieutenant.

"We couldn't have three better appointments to the Dartmouth Police," said Select Board member Shawn McDonald.

The addition of one captain and two permanent lieutenant positions to the police department to creates a sustainable command structure and increases accountability, explained Chief Bob Szala when first pitching the idea at an October Select Board meeting.

The savings will come from altering the scheduling, explained Szala. Previously, all the command positions worked Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The lieutenants will also be responsible for patrol duties.

Additionally, Jeffrey Lewis, who retired on November 28, was appointed as a special police officer, allowing him to continue serving.
