Police Chief Stephen Soares honored with funeral procession

Dec 31, 2015

The citizens of Dartmouth bid retired Dartmouth Police Chief Stephen Soares a fond farewell during a funeral procession through town on Dec. 30.

Soares served as Dartmouth's police chief from 1983 until his retirement in 2000. He died on Christmas Eve at Tufts Medical Center in Boston following complications with cancer. He was 70 years old.

The funeral procession began outside of the police station shortly after 10 a.m.

Two fire trucks were parked on either side of Russells Mills Road, and a large, billowing American flag was suspended between the ladders of the vehicles. Police officers, firefighters and members of the public stood in silence as the funeral procession drove beneath the flag.

The procession continued to Chase Road and down Old Westport Road where Captain Timothy Sheenan and officers from the UMass Police Department were waiting at the edge of the street to salute Soares.

Soares was buried at Evergreen Cemetery.
