Potato sacks and pizza: DeMello Elementary hosts Field Day

Jun 9, 2017

DeMello Elementary student Zoe Beckman stood dripping wet in a sun soaked field. She had worked with her peers, relay style, to transfer water from one bucket to another located across the field with only a sponge.

"It was really fun. We got soaked though," explained third grader Haydon Raposa.

The challenge was one of 12 stations set up for DeMello's field day on June 8. All 420 students at the elementary school had teamed up by class — identified by colorful t-shirts — and rotated through stations every 10 minutes.

While the day included potato sack races, bouncy houses, and dribbling challenges, second grader Sydney Hart had another favorite.

"I really like jumping over the hurdles," she said.

Ayden Carreiro described the challenge ahead of him. "You have to get to the end and back. Your legs are tied together," he said, pointing to the plastic straps that teams used for the three-legged race.

Parents, siblings, and grandparents cheered the students on from the sidelines, before gathering for a pizza and watermelon luncheon with the competitors.

"It's a wonderful community day for us," said Principal Cathy Maccini. She explained that following lunch, both staff and students would engage in a tug of war contest.

Student Ethan Mediros was most excited for the break from rainy weather.  "The weather was nice. It wasn't too hot," he said.

For mom Nicole Sirois, the field day was a treat, as she was able to hang out with all three of her children.

"They're having fun. They're cheering each other on. It kind of brings the school together," she said.
