Quinn Elementary offers trick or treats in trunks

Terror lurks around every corner during Halloween, but at James M. Quinn Elementary, terror was found exclusively in the parking lot.

The bright, Waxing Gibbous moon shone down on the school’s Halloween event last Friday, illuminating 26 cars filled with parents and administrators who volunteered during the first annual “Trick or Trunk” event.

“Lots of parents volunteered candy and treat items,” said Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) President Lisa Perry. “Everyone is having a good time.”

Trick or Trunk replaced the annual Halloween party that Quinn usually hosts after the school couldn’t secure a DJ. Parents decorated the back of their cars with various Halloween props and passed out candy and treats. Parent Karen Watson said the Trick or Trunk event seemed to be very well attended and thought the cars outside were well decorated.

“It was a huge success, so we’ll probably do this next year, too,” said Perry.

During the spooky festivities outside, the school also hosted its annual Family Scholastic Book Fair Night. After students strolled around, giggling and peering into the candy-filled cars, they were able to warm up inside and browse the selection of books for sale.

“I think it’s a great turnout,” said parent Kelly St. Laurent. “I love that so many parents are involved and are having a great time with their kids.”

Fifth grader Dylan Lavoie said that the candy was his favorite part.

“The trunks were all really good, too,” said Lavoie.

Assistant Principal Audra Thomas thought the excitement of the students was the best part, and that events such as Trick or Trunk bring everyone together as a community.

“It’s amazing,” said Thomas. “For the kids to be here at school on a Friday night and be excited is great. All the people who donated their time and money make events like this so special.”

Ultimately, Principal Colin Grimsey had the final say as to what trunk was the best, based on the decorations. First place went to the Charrier family, second place went to the Delgado family and third place was given to the Magalhaes family.

“It was a great night,” said first-place winner Rachel Charrier. “I’m surprised so many kids came out.”
