Racers breeze through first day of Buzzards Bay Regatta

The first day of the Buzzards Bay Regatta went off without a hitch as hundreds of sailors from 19 different states and four countries were met with medium winds and near perfect temps in Apponagansett Bay Friday.
"It was a beautiful day," said Albert Signorella of Padanaram, who skippered his boat "Sundance" to a second-place finish in the J100 Series earlier in the day.
Racers in several different divisions participated in the event based out of the New Bedford Yacht Club, which takes place over the course of the weekend.
Despite having a bad day racing-wise, Jan Kite-Powell of Duxbury enjoyed his second year racing in the 420 division.
"We had a lot go wrong, but we made the best of it," he said.
"There was a nice breeze," added his sailing partner Emily Larimer, also of Duxbury.
"You can clearly see it's a young-person's sport," said a New Bedford Yacht Club member named Diane, who declined to give her last name. "They've been out there all day. Just the look on their faces when they're pulling their boats out of the water is wonderful."
"It's a great time," she added of the event.
Fallon Gonsalves of Westport said she didn't race, but volunteered to help out both on the water and on land after the races were through.
"It was nice. We watched to make sure the sailors didn't go over the line too early. We're helping whoever needs help here.”
Event organizer Mary Ellen DeFrias was happy with the first day’s events following the races.
“We are happy. We have happy sailors,” she said. “All the circuits had good racing. The wind was great, and that’s what sailing’s all about.”
Other notable Dartmouth finishers included “Jabberwocky” captained by Jonathan Bier in the PHRF Race Series 3 with a time 3:55:33.
The races resume Saturday at 10:30 a.m. For a complete list of results and scheduling information, visit http://www.buzzardsbayregatta.com/
