Resident allegedly attacked with baton near D'Angelo's
Police have arrested a New Bedford man after he allegedly assaulted a Dartmouth man in front of D'Angelo Grilled Sandwiches on August 13.
Dartmouth Police responded to a reported fight in progress around 6:20 p.m. near the Dartmouth Street storefront. While the suspects had fled the scene, police later arrested Eugenio Gonsalves Andrade, 21, of South First Street.
According to police, the 29-year-old victim said he had been attacked by several men, and that they had used a police-style baton to beat him. The victim also reported that the men attempted to take his gold necklace, damaged his vehicle, and brandished a firearm, police said.
The victim's injuries were evaluated, but he refused further medical attention at the scene, police said.
Andrade was identified as the primary suspect via the investigation, as he and the victim were familiar with one another, police said. Upon receiving information about Andrade's whereabouts, Officer Brian Parent arrested Andrade later that evening.
Andrade was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (baton), malicious damage to a motor vehicle, armed assault to rob (firearm), and assault and battery.
Neither the baton nor firearm were recovered, police said. The investigation is ongoing as police look into the other suspects' involvement during the assault, police said.
No further information is available at this time.
