Residents may leave out pumpkins and cornstalks for yard waste collection

Oct 30, 2023

Dartmouth residents have options for keeping their Halloween pumpkins and cornstalks out of the landfill.

These options include the pick-up or drop-off of pumpkins, cornstalks and other yard waste, as well as backyard composting.

SMART Program customers can place unpainted pumpkins and cornstalks along with grass, leaves and twigs at the curbside for collection on scheduled yard waste collection days.

Customers on the Monday and Tuesday solid waste collection routes have yard waste collection on Friday, Nov. 17. Customers on the Wednesday and Thursday solid waste collection routes have yard waste collection on Friday, Nov. 3 and Friday, Dec. 1.

All materials must be placed in paper bags, loose in barrels or in corrugated boxes. All lights, twine and other decorations must be removed before placing pumpkins and cornstalks out for removal.

Pumpkins, cornstalks and yard waste also may be brought to the Water Pollution Control Facility at 759 Russells Mills Road, Dartmouth. A transfer station sticker is required and available free of charge to SMART customers. Dartmouth residents who are not SMART customers can pay a fee for the service.

Hours for the yard waste drop-off area are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 7:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. and Saturdays 7:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.

Whether picked up or dropped off, yard waste from Dartmouth residents goes to the Crapo Hill Landfill where it is composted.

Unpainted pumpkins and cornstalks can also be placed in backyard compost bins. Bins are available for $25 at the Crapo Hill Landfill Scale House, 300 Samuel Barnet Boulevard, New Bedford, from Monday through Friday 7:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.
