Rufus S. Paine, Jr., 88

Rufus S. Paine, Jr., 88, of Dartmouth passed away Friday, July 15, after a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of the late Cynthia P. (Johnson) Paine.

Born in New Bedford, a son of the late Rufus S. and Laura (Orcutt) Paine, he was a lifetime area resident and a member of the Smith Mills Congregational Church in N. Dartmouth.

Mr. Paine served in the United States Navy during World War II. He worked as a machinist at Acushnet Company for over 40 years before retiring. Rufus was a member of the Shriners and was a Scottish Rite 32 Degree Mason. He was an avid hiker and cyclist. He belonged to the Narragansett Bay Wheelmen the Appalachian Mountain Club and the 4000 Footer Club.

He is survived by a son, Erik Paine and his wife Vicki of Dartmouth; a daughter, Alison Grinwis and her husband Robert of Kennett Square, PA; a brother, Stanley Paine of Westport; grandchildren, Kristin Pierce, Marin Pierce and his wife Amanda, Erin Paine, Daniel Paine, Erik Paine, Kelsey Paine, Hannah Grinwis and Erica Lehmer and her husband Matthew. He was the father of the late Linda L. Pierce and Alan W. Paine.
