School Committee candidate Kyle Ross
As someone whose background differs from the School Committee’s current members, candidate Kyle Ross says he would provide a fresh viewpoint if elected.
“I feel like I could bring a good perspective to the board with my diverse background,” Ross said. “I’d almost call myself an outsidert candidate.”
Ross, 29, holds a masters degree in business and operated his own food truck business in Rhode Island before switching careers. He is now a corrections officer for the state.
Ross, who moved to town with his wife and young son in 2011, is seeking a seat on the committee for the first time. Now 3 and a half, Ross’ son is just entering the Dartmouth school system as a preschooler.
This wouldn’t be his first time serving on a town board. Ross was elected to the Conservation Commission in 2013 and served briefly on the town’s Recreation Commission.
Fairly new to town politics, Ross said his interest stems from an unexpected source - as a youth football coach.
“That’s really where I got my passion for being involved,” Ross said. “As soon as I moved down here I was the new person in town and I said, ‘All right, I’ve got to get involved.’” Ross says he’s interested in improving communication between the the schools and parents. Also, he wants to see more opportunities for those students who aren’t receiving enough attention from administrators and staff.
Ross said if elected he’d conentrate on closing the current budget gap, which has officials considering cutting staff positions in the arts, physical education and special education. “It’s really important to pay attention to our kids,” he said. “They’re our biggest asset.”
