School officials to offer input on impact of development on district

With housing developments on the horizon and new families potentially moving into town, the town’s school population could be on the increase, Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations James Kiely told School Committee members at their Aug. 25 meeting.

Kiely has been invited to provide the schools’ perspective during discussions of the Zoning Board on these potential projects and their impacts on the district.

“We’ll have the opportunity to offer input into the ZBA process and comment on potential projects,’’ he said.

He cited a 288 multi-bedroom unit project on Route 6 that has received all the necessary permits. This development, he said, would likely “produce a fair number of students.’’

Other housing projects are at various stages in the planning process, he said.

Superintendent of Schools June Saba-Maguire said district officials “need to be part of these conversations for planning’’ purposes.

Knowing how many families are anticipated to move into town helps school staff plan “how many teachers we need, how many classrooms we need, how many students’’ will be added to the enrollment numbers.

Kiely noted that in recent years, the student enrollment has dropped and budgets were adjusted accordingly.

New developments, he said, could turn those numbers around. “We could be asked pretty quickly to go back in the other direction,’’ he noted.

Being involved in the planning process is “encouraging,’’ he said. By having the information as early as possible, “we’ll at least know it’s coming.’’
