Select Board approves new precinct plan
Some Dartmouth voters will be casting their ballots from new precinct locations next spring.
The Select Board Monday unanimously approved to redraw the voting precincts, as required by law.
District lines must be redrawn every ten years following the federal census.
The town will continue to be divided into nine precincts, but Town Clerk Sarah Haskell-Arruda noted that “some small boundaries have moved” to ensure that no precinct has more than 4,000 people and that populations are evenly distributed.
The most significant change comes to Precinct 3, which saw zero votes cast in the 2021 town election.
Prior to the update, the precinct solely consisted of students at UMass Dartmouth. Under the new plan, a neighborhood from Precinct 2 will be added.
The exact neighborhood was not specified at the meeting.
The town clerk hopes the change will provide the precinct with representation at upcoming Town Meetings.
“Currently, we have no Town Meeting representation for [Precinct] 3,” Arruda said.
Precinct changes will be submitted before the Secretary of State’s office and, once approved, will take effect in January 2022.
