Select Board candidate Shawn McDonald
For the second election in a row, current Select Board Chair Shawn McDonald won’t face any challengers, and the longtime volunteer says he’s looking forward to another three years on the board.
Involved in Dartmouth politics since 1976, McDonald has been a member of Town Meeting, the Finance Committee and the School Committee before he was elected as a selectman six years ago. He also served on the High School Building Committee.
Born in New Bedford, McDonald moved to town in 1970 and started working for a property management company in 1980.
During his tenure as a selectman, he said the board and town employees were proud to earn a AAA bond rating. While the Select Board sometimes gets recognized for such achievements, McDonald said there’s a cooperative atmosphere in Town Hall.
“We have a tendency to take the credit…but we recognize the work of the staff and that’s something we all should be proud of,” McDonald said.
Looking down the road, there are several issues the board will face in the coming years, he said. Among them, capital projects like the new police station and library as well as infrastructure improvements.
Funding those big ticket items requires fiscal know how, McDonald said.
“It’s about developing good fiscal polices, a good tax rate and improving quality of life for residents,” he said. “Right now, there’s a general sense that everything is going well, but we still have to remain vigilant. If you do have a bump in the road you want to take care of it.”
