Spring flies in with cape-clad students and a carnival

Faster than a speeding bullet were the hundreds of kids running around at DeMello Elementary’s annual Superhero Carnival.

The May 20 carnival included dozens of games – many of which were created by parents and students – like water gun villain blasting, duck fishing, ring tosses, and an obstacle course. Additionally, there were raffles and photo opportunities with crime-fighting comic book characters.

“This is our primary fundraiser of the year, and it’s a fun family day too,” said DeMello/Cushman PTO President Mary Waite. She said about 300 children were expected at the event, which is roughly half of the student body of both schools.

The fun isn’t limited to DeMello and Cushman students and families, however. Alumni come back every year to volunteer and help run the games and events.

Current Dartmouth Middle sixth graders Bridget Markey, Camilla Murray, and Courtney Cabral staffed one of the carnival games in their favorite superhero garb – the Flash, Captain America, and Superman, respectively.

“We all originally went to DeMello, and we like to come back and see everyone again,” Murray said.

Through donations, a fundraiser, and admission costs, Waite anticipated that the carnival would bring in about $10,000, which traditionally goes toward funding field trips, enrichment nights, and class projects, she said. Although profits from the carnival have not been earmarked yet, one goal is to replace the aging front sign at the DeMello School with a new one.
