State meeting for proposed septic upgrade requirements May 18

May 16, 2023

Dartmouth Director of Public Health Chris Michaud, is encouraging residents to attend a virtual public meeting of the Title V Advisory Committee on Thursday, May 18th at 2 p.m.

This meeting comes as an update to the ongoing discussion about proposed septic system upgrade requirements, which state officials hope will reduce nitrogen pollution in Buzzards Bay.

The meeting will be held by Zoom and can be accessed at this link.

State officials will explain the proposed upgrade requirements, the time allotted for upgrades and watershed permits to be acquired, the streamline watershed permit process and they will discuss some of the comments they received in response to this project.

According to MassDEP in a 2022 meeting, about 2,700 homes in Dartmouth could be affected by regulation changes.

One of the biggest concerns residents have with the proposed required upgrades is the price. “Active nitrogen removal systems” generally cost $10,000 to $15,000, according to the Buzzards Bay Coalition.
