Storm brings down power lines

Jan 13, 2018

A powerful storm including heavy rain and strong winds overnight on January 12-13 brought down power lines and is expected to produce hazardous road conditions in the afternoon.

According to police and scanner traffic, crews responded to several reports of wires down in the morning on January 13, including on Collins Corner Road, where Dartmouth Fire District No. 3 and police responded to a report of downed wire on fire and blocking the road at around 9 a.m. The road remained closed until about 2 p.m. when the scene was cleared.

Flooded streets were also reported in the morning. According to the National Weather Service, a flood watch was in effect until 1 p.m. A wind advisory was in effect earlier in the morning, and expired at 9 a.m.

Once the storm is over, a new risk in the form of flash freezing is expected. The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement warning of a rapid drop in temperature, expected between 2 and 4 p.m. along the South Coast.

Temperatures are expected to drop from the mid-50s to below freezing in a short period of time due to a cold front moving into the area, and wind gusts of up to 50 MPH are predicted.

Standing water may quickly freeze. Motorists are advised to use caution and be prepared for some icy spots.
