Sumner H. Morse, 96

Sumner H. Morse, 96, of Dartmouth, passed away on Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at Our Lady’s Haven. He was the husband of the late Jean A. (Elkin) Morse.

Born in Boston, son of the late Michael J. and Anna (Peskin) Morse, he came to Dartmouth in 1978 where he lived for 10 years, then in retirement moved to Florida for 20 years and returned to Dartmouth in 2009 to live with his family.

Mr. Morse served in the United States Army Air Corp. during World War II. He was a graduate of Boston Latin School, class of 1941 and received a Master’s degree from Boston University in 1949.

Mr. Morse was a Scout Executive for the Boy Scouts of America for 38 years and also served as executive director at the Temple Reyam in West Newton for 3 years.

Sumner was a member of the Fall River and Quincy Rotary Clubs, a Mason with the Hammett Lodge and a Brookline Lions Club member. He enjoyed playing tennis, cribbage, reading, reciting poetry and traveling with his wife, especially on cruises. He loved spending time with his family whom he adored.

His family includes a daughter, Judith M. Carter and her husband Gary of Dartmouth; a son, Edward Morse and his wife Terrie of Mahopac, NY; his grandchildren, Kerri and husband Brian, Stephanie and husband Lucas, Courtni, Scott and wife Carrie, Jordan and wife Elise, Aimee and husband Seth, Nicholas and Elizabeth; 9 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was father of the late Steven Morse and brother of the late Bernice Shuman.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 2, 2020 in the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Boy Scouts of America or a charity of one’s choice. For online tributes, visit waring-sullivan.com.
