SWAT team called to Solemar apartment after shots fired
Dartmouth police and a SWAT unit took a Seabreeze Dr. resident into custody after the resident allegedly fired several gunshots inside an apartment.
According to police, officers arrested Eric Nellis, 54, of 63B Seabreeze Dr. after he allegedly fired a handgun inside his apartment. Police had responded to the address to conduct a welfare check at around 2:30 a.m., and allegedly heard the gunshots once they arrived at the apartment.
Police secured the scene, and called in the South Eastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (SEMLEC) SWAT Unit.
A SWAT officer was able to convince Nellis to exit the apartment peacefully. Nellis was taken into custody without incident.
Nellis was sent to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford for evaluation. He is charged with discharging a firearm within 500’ of a building, disturbing the peace, two counts of vandalism, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, and carrying a firearm while intoxicated.
After arresting Nellis, police obtained a search warrant to search the apartment. Officers confiscated two semi-automatic handguns, and several hundred rounds of ammunition.
“I am extremely pleased that there were no injuries as a result of this man’s foolish and careless actions,” Police Chief Brian Levesque said in a press release. “I applaud the actions of every officer involved in this incident, as it could have ended much differently."
