Friday, April 20

Celebrate a new chancellor.

University of Massachusetts Dartmouth will host an investiture ceremony for Chancellor Robert. E. Johnson at the campus main auditorium, 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to arrive by 10 a.m. An academic procession begins at 10:45 a.m. and the main ceremony is at 11 a.m. The event is free to attend and open to the public. Go on a nighttime stroll.

The Lloyd Center will celebrate Earth Day with a night hike through its 430 Potomska Road reserve, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Education on nocturnal animals and the sounds they make will be included, as well as tips on making backyards more wildlife-friendly. The cost to attend is $8 for Lloyd Center members and $10 for non-members. Visit lloydcenter.org for more information and to register.

Saturday, April 21

Tour a farm.

Round the Bend Farm will host an Open Farm Day at its 92 Allen Neck Road location, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Non-GMO and grass-fed meat, seasonal veggies, honey, maple syrup, and herbal teas will be for sale. Shop for jewelry

St. Julie Billiart Church will host a jewelry sale at its 494 Slocum Road church, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. New, used, costume, and sterling silver pieces will be for sale, among others.

Have a breakfast staple.

The Dartmouth Grange will host a Jonnycakes at the Grange breakfast at its 1133 Fisher Road location, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. The breakfast includes locally sourced jonnycakes from Gray’s Grist Mill, pancakes, maple syrup, bacon, hard-boiled eggs, hot and cold beverages. Coffee milk, Rhode Island-made soda, jonnycake cornmeal, and maple syrup will also be available. The cost to attend is $10 per adult and $6 per child. A breakfast will also be held on April 28. Discover nature.

The Lloyd Center will host its Nature Discoveries drop-in program at 9:30 a.m. at its Potoskoma Road location. The event, which includes readings of nature-themed books and explorations of the Lloyd Center, along with animal demonstrations, specimen examination, hikes, and other activities, is suited for children ages 2-6. The cost is $5 for members and $6 for non-members. Visit lloydcenter.org for more information.

Clean up around town.

The town’s annual Green Up Day is scheduled for April 21. To participate, free disposal bags can be picked up at the Department of Public Works’ 759 Russells Mills Road location during normal hours. On Saturday, the community is invited to pitch in and clean up. Bags can then be dropped off at six drop-off locations around town by the end of the weekend to be collected. Learn from local authors.

Claire T. Carney Library Associates' Author's Brunch will be held at noon at the Woodland Commons building at the university's main 285 Old Westport Road campus. The brunch will feature discussions by three authors, Megan Marshall, Susan L. Mizruchi and Leigh Montville. Tickets are $35. To reserve tickets, call Rita Raymond at (508) 995-3528. Clean up the outdoors.

Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust will host an Earth Day Clean Up of its Ridge Hill Reserve location, beginning at 1 p.m. Volunteers are encouraged to come pitch in and help clean up the property. Ridge Hill Reserve is located at 545 Collins Corner Road.

Get the inside scoop on historic homes.

The Dartmouth Historical and Arts Society will present a lecture on the history of selected Chase Road houses at 6:30 p.m. at its 1205 Russells Mills Road headquarters. The in-depth and illustrated lecture will include several homes, including the Henry Howland house, the Baker-Potter-Helfand House, the O. Potter House at 473 Chase Road, and the Jonathan Russell House. All are invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served. A $5 donation at the door is suggested.
