Take the dog for a swim.

The Dartmouth YMCA’s pool will go to the dogs on September 1 for its Puppy Splash Pool Party. The annual post-summer event marks the closure of the YMCA’s pool until next summer. But before it is fully closed for the season, pooches are invited to take a dip. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Dartmouth YMCA’s 276 Gulf Road location. The cost to participate is $10 per dog. For more information, visit ymcasouthcoast.org.

Spot some butterflies.

From 10 to 12, flock to Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary for their annual Allens Pond Butterfly Census. The whole family is invited to this event, which is appropriate for children ranging in age from 2 to 16 years. Members of the Massachusetts Butterfly Club will lead teams into different areas of the Sanctuary to help visitors identify species. Meet at the Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary field station parking lot, located at 1280 Horseneck Rd., Westport, MA at 10am to divide into census teams. Participants should wear long pants, sunscreen and bring water and a snack or lunch. If you have any questions or would like to make a reservation please call the Sanctuary at (508) 636-2437 or email allenspond@massaudubon.org. Reservation is required and is also available online at www.massaudubon.org.
