Three Dartmouth girls to go to Disney World Summit Cheer Competition

Apr 17, 2019

Three young women from Dartmouth will be joining their cheer team on a trip to Disney World to compete in a premier national-level competition in May.

Sydney Downs, 14, Victoria Purcell, 14, and Kiana Purtell, 16, won first place with their cheer team Lava at a JAMfest competition last month, earning them a bid to compete in the renowned D2 Summit at the ESPN centre in Disney World on May 10 to 12.

The D2 Summit is a private tournament in which only very high-level performers are invited to enter.

The cheer team — from New Bedford’s South Coast Storm Elite gym — is made up of nine athletes who range in age from 11 to 18.

Self-styled “Team Mom” Erika Downs commented: “This is a huge accomplishment especially when they normally compete against larger teams and gyms...these athletes worked incredibly hard and put in countless hours of training to earn this honor.”

In order to help cover the costs of their trip, the girls will hold a spaghetti supper fundraiser on April 26 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Club Sport Madierenese in New Bedford.

Tickets can be purchased on the door.
