Three police officers sent to hospital after exposure to ‘toxic chemical fumes’
Three Dartmouth Police officers were sent to the hospital Wednesday morning after responding to a call at a male resident’s home involving “noxious chemicals.”
The officers experienced dizziness, sore throats, irritated eyes and noses and headaches. The officers were treated and released at St. Luke’s in New Bedford, and the doctors did not have “any immediate concerns,” according to Detective Kyle Costa.
All of the chemicals that caused the “toxic” fumes were deemed legal by firefighters at the scene. The fumes were produced through a combination of household cleaning products, said Fire District 1 Chief Pete Andrade. It’s not clear why the resident combined these chemicals, but officers were checking on him because of his “altered mental status.”
The male resident whose home contained the chemicals was still being treated at St. Luke’s hospital at the time of publication.
