Town to launch new recycling program
The Town of Dartmouth, in partnership with New Bedford-based business HandUp, is launching a new mattress and box spring recycling program for Dartmouth residents next month.
Beginning Feb. 1, residents can contact HandUp to make an appointment for curbside pickup of a mattress and or box spring by calling (774) 271-8744.
“We are pleased to be partnering with an environmentally and socially conscious local business that helps reduce waste by recycling unusable mattresses, reduces the need for more mattresses to be created by sanitizing and upcycling usable mattresses, and contributes to the local economy,” said Interim Director of Public Works Tim Barber.
The charge for a mattress and for a box spring are $35 each.
SMART customers will continue to have the option of calling the Department of Public Works at (508) 999-0740 to arrange for mattress and box spring pickup. The Town charges $35 for each mattress and $10 for each box spring.
Residents can also drop off mattresses and box springs at the Dartmouth Transfer Station, located at 976 Russells Mills Road.
The charge for a mattress is $25 each and the charge for a box spring is $14 each.
The Transfer Station is open Tuesday and Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., except for holidays or other scheduled closures.
A transfer station permit is required.
