Town to offer paddle boarding, kayaking lessons

The town Parks and Recreation Department has teamed up with Osprey Sea & Surf to offer water recreation at Apponagansett Park this summer.

All classes emphasize fun and safety on the water, according to the department's website. Life vests must be warn by participants, and all necessary equipment will be provided.

For kids:

One paddle boarding or kayaking session will introduce kids to the basics with an on-land lesson on equipment and basic paddle strokes, and in-water games and skill development. Classes service kids aged 11-15.

The three-hour kayaking sessions occur on July 7, July 21, August 4, and August 25 at 9:30 a.m. The fee is $50. The two-hour paddle boarding sessions occur on June 30, July 28, and August 18 at 9:30 a.m. The fee is $45.

Three-day paddle sport sessions will service students, aged 12-16, with games, group activities, and exploration. The three-hour sessions run July 12-14, or August 14-16, and begin at 9:30 a.m. The fee is $161.

Stand-up paddle boarding:

In one, two-hour class, participants can expect to improve balance, get a core body workout, and learn about equipment, water entry, and proper stance. Classes start at 9:30 a.m. on June 17, July 15, and August 19. The fee is $53.

Kayaking:

In one, three-hour session, participants will learn about safety, how to exit an overturned kayak, and the basics of boat movement and control. Classes start at 9:30 a.m. on June 4, July 1, and August 6. The fee is $57.
