Town seeks lease applications for McBratney land

The Town of Dartmouth is accepting applications to lease recreational land on Slocum Road.

At its June 27 meeting, the Select Board issued a Request for Qualifications — which asks potential suppliers or vendors to detail their background and experience providing a specific good or service — to lease the town-owned McBratney parcel.

This request comes nearly one year after Town Meeting members agreed to negotiate a new lease for the land for up to 30 years.

The parcel is currently home to the Burgo Basketball Association. In 2018, the association was prevented from buying the Slocum Road property after the family of former owner J. Greer McBratney told the town that the donor did not want the property to be sold.

Steve Burgo, who founded and operates the nonprofit association, said he very much intends to re-lease the property for the full term and use all 29 acres of the property, instead of the 12 acres the basketball facility uses now.

Plans include the construction of an indoor recreation center, along with soccer fields that could be used by the SouthCoast United Soccer Club or the Dartmouth Youth Soccer Association.

“When we get done with this building, a lot of people are going to be impressed,” he said. “It’s going to take care of a lot of stuff this town doesn’t have and probably won’t have for some time.”

All of this, he said, would be done in close consultation with the town.

“We’re willing to do whatever we can for the kids, because this is what this is all about,” Burgo said.

Lease applications will be made available on July 8 and are due to Town Hall by Sept. 9.
