Two-time fourball champs get shot at third win
This week, a duo of fourball players are looking to make some history at the Country Club of New Bedford.
Two-time defending champs Kim DeRossi-Walecka and Rosemary Zehntner have their sights set on a three-year winning streak at the Women’s 37th Four-Ball Tournament.
“Nobody has won back-to-back like we did for 25 years. And nobody in this area, in men’s or women’s, have gone for three,” said DeRossi-Walecka, adding that the two won 10 consecutive matches in the last two tournaments.
The tournament runs from Monday to Friday. Normally, it involves 32 teams, but this year’s event will feature 28.
DeRossi-Walecka, who is from Dartmouth, said she started playing golf about nine years ago at the request of her husband, Kevin. She’s been playing four-ball with Zehntner for the past six years. She admits that the road to victory didn’t come naturally.
“I took a lot of lessons, and I worked very hard at it. Somewhere, I think I might have athletic ability. It didn’t come easy, but it came easier than most,” she said.
She said for anyone who’s only ever played a casual round of golf, be warned: the crowds that spectate the event might throw off new players.
“It’s meant to be a fun event, but it is stressful because you have spectators that come and watch you,” she said.
“I learned the hard way. A couple years ago, I played at the Allendale Country Club, and I made it to the finals in their fourball. That was my first experience of ever being in finals. There were lots of carts, people moving. We lost because I couldn’t handle the pressure.”
She advised that, for new players, it’s important to focus on the experience of playing golf rather than the hustle and bustle of the tournament.
Despite her past successes, DeRossi-Walecka remains modest about her team's chances.
“I plan on playing all five days and being in the finals and winning, but any given team can beat you on any given day,” DeRossi-Walecka. “You need to have a good round of golf and have to have a little bit of luck — and you have to do that for five days in a row.”
Tee time for the Women’s 37th Four-Ball Tournament is at 8 a.m. on Monday. DeRossi-Walecka and Zehntner will attempt to extend their winning streak at 9 a.m.
